Yesterday’s Embers by Deborah Raney I have to share this book because it is such a moving, heartbreaking book! The gist of the story line is a father that becomes widowed when his wife and one of his daughters die in their sleep from carbon monoxide poisoning. He ends up attempting to raise five children on his own, loses his way from the faith he had in God, and falls for someone unexpectedly. However, this love turns into the need to fill a void.

ConCourt justice Albie Sachs’ new book, The Strange Alchemy of Life and Law , will be published by OUP in the UK this month, and appear in SA a bit later this year. For the uninitiated, Sachs’ writing – which the world first had proper sight of with The Jail Diary of Albie Sachs – is light but strong, intellectually invigorating and at times quite moving. Strange Alchemy is sure to be a real treat.

The so-called ‘Holocaust Denier’, Frederick Toben, was sentenced on May 13th 2009 by an Australian Court to three months in jail for ‘Contempt of Court’. Dr Toben: so paranoid he seems to believe the Jewish/Israel Lobby is trying to gag him The Court determined Dr Toben had breached previous court orders ordering him not to publish material deemed by an earlier judicial decision to be in breach of Australia’s Racial Discrimination Act. Dr Toben was granted two weeks to lodge an appeal.
